Left Coast offers a modern take on the early days of the movie palace, when live music often accompanied silent film, and theaters presented other entertainers between short films. Live and recorded arts intermingled freely. Tonight's films range from abstract to realistic, as do the musical interludes. Look through the camera's eye at Market Street on one hand, at the borderline between sanity and madness on the other; listen to Syrinx as the music depicts a nymph, then to Nadia Boulanger's music for cello and piano, which only suggests the tempo to be played, leaving all concrete inspirations untranslated.
