Congratulations to composer Laura Elise Schwendinger and librettist Ginger Strand for winning the 2023 Charles Ives Opera Prize with their opera "Artemisia," first premiered by Left Coast Chamber Ensemble in 2019!

An opera of passion, betrayal, and art in 17th Century Italy, "Artemisia" is based upon the life of famed painter Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 - c.1656). With projected images that come to life, the opera tackles Gentileschi’s struggles and triumphs as she battles inequality and reveals hidden stories.

"Artemisia" was produced, in part, due to generous funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the San Francisco Arts Commission, Roger Shapiro Fund for New Music, Fleishhacker Foundation, Mead Witter School of Music at the University of Wisconsin - Madison, and a Discovery Grant for Female Composers from the National Opera Center.
