Seong Ae Kim

Seong Ae Kim is a Korean-born composer based in New York City. She has received commissions from internationally-acclaimed ensembles and soloists such as Forward Music Project (Amanda Gookin), Parhelion Trio, ensemble mise-en, Iktus Percussion, Ensemble Pan, Multicultural Sonic Evolution, Josh Perry, Vasko Dukovsky, Kelley Barnett, Jessica Kunttu, Sally Wall and Eunmoo Heo among others.

Her recent works spanning the past 5 years have been acutely focused on amplifying self-truth and voicing social justice concerns. Compositions as #MeToo, the other untold story, and Collocation are self-confessional in nature. These pieces aim to tell her own stories of breakthroughs and to create safe spaces to share vulnerabilities that connect us all as human beings.

As an advocate for social justice, Kim has collaborated with fellow artists to create the pieces SIDE-BLOW, Red-blue-very white, Break free, Fever Dream, and Sound Of Soundless to address current social crises. She lends her voice through these pieces to encourage those who are marginalized and voiceless to stand up and amplify themselves for their basic human rights.

Her works were presented at Composer’s Conference, June in Buffalo, Women Composers Festival of Hartford, International Double Reed Society, Audio Trending Manual Festival in Seoul-South Korea, New York Women Composers Festival and Hot Air Music festival. The Köhne Quartet, Ipse Ensemble, the Krechkovsky-Loucks Duo, Rath Duo, Pro Arte Orchestra and Er-Gene Kahng are a few of the various ensembles and artists to perform her music.

She holds a PhD in composition from Stony Brook University and an MA and BA in composition and conducting from University for music and performing arts in Vienna, Austria. www.seongaekim.com
